European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
