FromSoftware's Dodge Roll Deserves to Be Celebrated

If you've played the popular action RPG, or just about any 3D action game, you're likely acquainted with the wonderful technique referred to as the “evasion roll.” This avoidance maneuver allows your character to perform a front, lateral, or rearward tumble to evade any enemy attacks and gain space from the bad guy. Sounds handy, wouldn't you say?

The dodge roll, though, has gotten significant backlash, not simply because of the rolling; it's been labeled dumb, a easy way out, and an unbelievable technique — and sometimes, I see the point. Just imagine me rolling around local Doppler gangs in a well-known fantasy game — they can't hit me! But Elden Ring's dodge roll is the dodge roll to surpass every other dodge rolls, and I'll tell you why.

Regarding this title, the developers found a great way to respond to all views suggesting the technique is not challenging enough: merely bestow all foes overwhelming force, triple that, and all heroes who approaches them will be eternally grateful because of their evasion move, myself included. Given the intense difficulty, successfully rolling to victory feels like an achievement, rather than a cheap trick.

No other evasion method in the game matches this sense of satisfaction and dependability, as quick dashes offer limited distance and guard stances are easily broken by strong enemies. A person once suggested hopping as the main game dodging technique, but besides failing to offer optimal placement, I didn't see how taking a crushing hit could enhance my odds of overcoming challenges (inexperience, possibly).

Perfecting the Skill

But even though the rolling dodge provides relief in an incredibly challenging experience, it isn't without skill. To begin with, this title's rolling dodge only triggers a period of immunity after you stop pressing the dodge button, which prevents a hasty, frantic retreat from perilous circumstances. Additionally, even though it can carry you off from foes, it's significantly more useful to use it as an opportunity to move nearer, preferably behind the opponent, and strike blows. Lastly, you must still grasp and foresee foe assaults, as dodging at the start of a prolonged preparation could conclude your immunity ahead of the attack striking… causing significant harm.

A Balanced Mechanic

While dodge-rolling in rapid sequence may look a bit ridiculous (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't really an option in the game. Of course, that doesn't render it a plausible fighting maneuver — exactly the reason it would be dreadful to see it in a game like Kingdom Come: Deliverance — but this is a spectacular magical game being considered, thus why worry?

Similar to any respectable evasion move, the game's dodge motion is spruced up with a brief tumbling leap at the commencement, offering a lively impression instead of plopping the player onto the ground. Based on your equipment, the move can feel incredibly quick or somewhat sluggish, however, it's consistently quicker and smoother than the rolling dodges used in Dark Souls. True, you could plant your large weapon into the ground while equipped with it, but that's your own fault for not just playing ranged weapons (Just kidding — avoid using Elden Ring with projectile weapons).

Ideal Equilibrium

The game's evasion system creates the perfect balance between difficulty and chance, providing prospects of success while endangering that very prospect at the smallest error. Learn this skill, and you'll gain not only success, but satisfaction.
