Just as bad weather swept through the northern region the night before, City overwhelmed the visitors away at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their championship potential as they reinforced their standing at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Losses for United

This result signalled back-to-back WSL setbacks for Skinner's side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the top team with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

United’s ability to manage domestic and continental football with a limited squad has been a widely debated issue since they qualified for the Champions League. Looking at the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would fully examine this fortitude. Sadly for the opposition, they looked fatigued all game, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Skinner had sought to make changes with a several alterations. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added energy, although the exclusion of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

The hosts, in contrast, have no similar workload worries. Jeglertz made a single alteration from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

They converted their dominance with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the hosts a corner. A cross to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was City’s seventh headed goal of the season.

They extended their advantage with two more goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was allowed to drive through the center from the back, the pitch became spacious for City. The influential Kerstin Casparij collected the pass on the wing before sending a accurate ground pass for Bunny Shaw to force home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a quick change in the ball saw Lauren Hemp afforded the space to strike a shot home from range.

Final Period

The clearest substitution came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to alter the outcome of the match. Ex- City player Park came most likely to score, hitting the post, but the visitors were creatively abject and were unable to record a single shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their lead when a superb Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the hosts. Having failed to beat any side who ended above them last season, City's side now have successes against the Gunners and United to position them in a commanding situation after nine games.
