Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
